Floyd's Diner, Victoria

Floyds exploded onto the scene about 5 years ago. It was a much-needed restaurant, there wasn't really a place downtown to accommodate large groups for food. It certainly has a lot of character, although some of that has faded as they no longer let people sign the walls, and have covered them in ubiquitous pop art.

Although when Floyds originally opened they served dinner, they have now moved to being a breakfast, brunch and lunch place only.

Service
Truth be told, I don't know how the service is in general these days as I haven't been there for quite a long time. I trust Petr, the owner, to hire good staff because he always has in the past. I had a crazy experience one day in which I got free breakfast because they moved me to a smaller table to accommodate a bigger group.

The servers here tend to be of the offbeat variety - artists, tattoos, funky clothes. Everyone is friendly, and despite the fact it's nearly always slammed it's rare to feel neglected. On a weekend, you might have to wait for a table for a little bit, but once you're seated things move along pretty well.

Food
January 20, 2011
Usually, I go for the huevos. Floyd's "huevos incredibalos" is pretty amazing... but Massive! This time, I opted for the BC Hash. I toyed with the idea of getting a half order, but decided to get a full and save some for lunch. As it turned out, I wasn't hungry for dinner until about 8 and I had trouble finishing it. Yowza!

It's a pretty tasty mountain of food. Crispy pieces of potato, chunks of sausage, bacon, salsa (although I'm surprised at this in reading the description, I don't remember much salsa flavour), egg, cheese and green onions all work well together. The sausages are just on the edge of my sausage tolerance with only a touch of the weird flavour sausages sometimes have.

My partner-in-food-and-life had the equally large Monte Cristo:  Ham, chicken, carmalized onions, Swiss cheese, chipotle mayo on egg dipped house-cut bread. This is an epic, epic sandwich of the kind I enjoy (warm with spicy mayo).  Again with the massiveness... the bread is really thick and the curly fries on the side are nearly too much... again with the saving half for lunch! I think we really had forgotten that the portions are so huge at Floyds!
